A Georgian house built in 1765, with six bedrooms, three bathrooms and one half bathroom, on a 6.4-acre lot

Kinderhook, about half an hour south of Albany and two and a half hours north of New York City, is a town with a year-round population of about 8,500 people. This house, a few minutes from the center of town, is known as the Burgoyne House; Gen. John Burgoyne of Britain briefly stayed here as a well-treated prisoner of the Continental Army after his defeat at the Battle of Saratoga. The house was enlarged over the course of the 19th century, but the original facade, including a Palladian window and classic Georgian pediment, remains in excellent condition.

The house, on Kinderhook’s main road, is near several other historic sites, including an art museum owned by the Columbia County Historical Society, a home associated with Benedict Arnold and the post-presidency home of Martin Van Buren.

The foyer stretches from the front entrance to the back of the house, with high ceilings and a brass chandelier. Turning right leads to the formal living room, where the walls are painted a warm yellow and the fireplace is framed with marble. A doorway connects the space to an alcove study with built-in bookshelves. Also on this side of the house is a guest suite with its own fireplace and a full bathroom, and another study with a large, rear-lawn-facing window and more built-in bookshelves.

To the left of the foyer is the formal dining room, painted a shade of rich blue, a color that would have been used in homes of this size and style in the 18th century. The molding along the ceiling is original, as are the pine floors. Through the dining room is a family room with another marble-framed fireplace, as well as a powder room. A butler’s pantry connects this section of the house to the kitchen, part of one of the 19th-century additions. Windows look over the back side of the property, and a door opens to a covered side porch.

Two staircases connect the first floor to the second. The main stairs, which start in the foyer, rise to a second-floor landing big enough to be used as a sitting area, bright thanks to a Palladian window facing the front lawn. Turning right leads to the primary bedroom, which has a fireplace trimmed with Delft tiles and a bathroom with a crystal chandelier and brass hardware. Two more bedrooms, used by the sellers as extensions of the primary bedroom, are on this side of the second floor and are connected by a short hallway that also includes a staircase leading to the kitchen.

To the left of the sitting area on the landing is another hallway, off which are two bedrooms and a bathroom. Each bedroom has its own fireplace and is large enough to hold a queen-size bed. Between them is a full bathroom.

Outdoor space: The covered porch off the kitchen is spacious, with more than enough room for a table and a sofa. The lot, nearly six and a half acres, is considered large so close to the center of town and includes a grove of mature trees. A detached garage on the property holds one car.

A 1927 Spanish-style house, with three bedrooms and five bathrooms, on a 0.2-acre lot

This house was designed by the architect Robert Finkelhor, who also built homes for Bob Hope and Barbara Stanwyck. The house, in the Beachwood Canyon neighborhood, is typical of Mr. Finkelhor’s style and has been well preserved by the current and previous owners. A portion of the Hollywood Sign is visible from the driveway, and the Beachwood Cafe, a neighborhood gathering spot, is within walking distance.

Since the Hollywoodland community was established in Beachwood Canyon in the 1920s, it has been popular among entertainers because of its privacy and, at the same time, proximity to more bustling parts of town. The center of Hollywood is 10 minutes away by car, while Studio City is a 15-minute drive.

Indoors: From the gated driveway, steps lead down to the main entrance, where an original wood door opens to a rotunda with exposed beams and a view of the living room below. Spanish tile lines the floor and continues along the staircase, trimmed by a wrought-iron banister.

The living room has high ceilings with more beams and a fireplace with an ornate wood mantel. Hardwood floors continue down another set of stairs into the dining room, connected to the kitchen by an arched doorway. In the kitchen, beadboard cabinets along the walls and under the counters are painted soft green, with colorful Spanish tiles forming a backsplash around the stainless-steel range. Both the dining room and kitchen face an enclosed sun porch, where floor-to-ceiling windows look over Beachwood Canyon.

To the left of the entryway, a short staircase leads up to the primary suite, made up of a bedroom, sitting room and bathroom. From the bedroom, wood-frame doors open to a private balcony, while the sitting room has a white brick wall and more canyon-facing windows. The bathroom has a claw-foot tub atop a blue and yellow tile floor with a quatrefoil motif.

A door tucked between the main staircase and the living room fireplace leads to a cozy den with built-in bookshelves. Next door is a full bathroom; a short corridor leads to another staircase, this one connecting the main level to guest bedrooms on the lower level. The lower level itself has two bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom. One bedroom has its own balcony, and the sellers converted a portion of unused space off the hallway into a laundry room. The home’s fifth bathroom is off the art studio, which was also added by the sellers and is accessible via its own entrance near the rear patio.

Outdoor space: Outdoor stairs lead from the top of the property to two patios, each paved with brick. The first patio is also accessible through the lower-level hallway and includes a built-in barbecue and a small lawn. The lower-level patio flanks the swimming pool and is trimmed with bougainvillea. At street level is a two-car garage, to which the sellers have added a full bathroom and a kitchenette.

A 1985 chalet with three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms and a one-bedroom, one-bathroom guest suite, on a 3.9-acre lot

This property near the Snake River is nestled among pine trees and has a remote feeling despite being 20 minutes by car from the heart of Jackson. Outdoor activities abound, with the house itself about 20 minutes by car from Munger Mountain and other hiking, as well as the skiing spots for which the Jackson Hole valley is known. A 2020 renovation included updates to the kitchen and bathrooms as well as new floors, light fixtures and interior paint.

Grand Teton National Park, a major destination for hiking, camping and trout fishing, is 25 minutes away, with Yellowstone National Park a 90-minute drive.

Indoors: A long, private driveway leads from the street to a paved area near the house, with a footpath and wood stairs to the main entrance.

The main floor is open, with the living area facing glass doors that open to a deck with views of the property’s trees. The wide-plank hardwood floors are new, and the slanted ceilings are wood-paneled. Stairs at the center of the living room rise to a lofted second floor, where white wood paneling along one wall meets the natural wood of the ceilings. The space is cozy, with enough room for a couch and television as well as a smaller nook that would be an ideal reading spot.

Downstairs, on the other side of the staircase, is the kitchen, which has a new center island and stainless-steel appliances that include a wine refrigerator and a Wolf range. The countertops are rough stone, and the island separates the kitchen from the dining area, where sliding glass doors open to another deck.

A hallway extends from this part of the house to the bedroom wing, with the primary suite at the far end. It has its own deck, as well as a fireplace built into one wall. A walk-in closet is off one side of the bedroom, and off the other is a bathroom with a porcelain soaking tub and separate glass-walled shower.
